Summer vacation in Santorini ’20

Summer is officially here and we are one step closer to our favorite Greek  islands-Santorini car rental. This summer we all want to travel safely and confidently. We have gathered here useful information about holidays on the islands this summer, such as how hotels, accommodation and camping will work, what applies to travel by boat and plane, what are the rules for organized beaches and camping, taverns and cafes.

Visitors from abroad

The tourist season in Greece officially started on June 15, when international flights opened at the airports of Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as the land borders with Albania, Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia.

According to recent guidelines, travelers arriving by air from areas with a high number of coronavirus cases (based on the EASA list) will be required to take a test and stay in a hotel for 1 day until the results are available. If the test is positive they should be quarantined for 14 days and their health condition will be monitored. For travelers coming from countries that are considered safe, an indicative sampling test will be performed.

Update July 6th

All passengers traveling from abroad to Greece and Santorini must complete a Passenger Location Form (PLF) at least 72 to 48 hours before their trip. In this form, travelers state their personal details and address of residence in Greece, where they must self-limit until the results of the coronavirus test come out (if they have been tested).

Direct flights from abroad to all airports in the country are allowed, except for flights from the United Kingdom and Sweden (until 15/7). The northern borders of the country remain closed, and the entrance is made only through the gate of the Bastion in Bulgaria. It is necessary for all visitors to observe the basic hygiene measures, is the mandatory use of a mask and the observance of distances of at least 1.5 meters.

Update 1st of August

According to the new instructions of the Civil Aviation Authority, the suspension of flights to and from Turkey, Albania and Northern Macedonia is extended until Saturday, August 15, while only those who travel by air from Bulgaria will enter with a negative Covid test. Romania and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, the ban on non-European citizens entering the country has been extended until 14 August.

Safety measures

The use of a mask is necessary at all airports, during the stay, boarding and disembarking in all waiting areas and transit of the airport but also during the trip. Other instructions for passengers include the use of antiseptic hands, frequent and thorough hand washing, keeping distance, contactless transactions where possible, and avoiding the use of lifts.

Traveling with a ship to Santorini

From July 1, the country’s sea gates are open for trips from / to abroad and itineraries are re-performed from Italy to Patras and Igoumenitsa. Some of the measures that apply to boat trips to the Greek islands this summer are:

  • Thermometry and completion of a special health questionnaire (pre-boarding form Covid-19) before boarding the ship.
  • Maintaining a distance of 1.5 meters during boarding, disembarkation and in all areas of the ship.
  • Use of a cabin by one (1) person except in cases where a family travels (in which case up to 4 people are allowed in the same cabin) or a disabled person with their companion.
  • Use of mask by passengers (cloth is recommended), but also by crew members in all areas of the ship.
  • The availability of ships will be set at 80% of the total tonnage of the ship or at 85% if they have cabins.

Hotels – accommodation in Santorini

From June 1, all twelve-month hotels and organized tourist camps reopen, while from June 15, all other tourist accommodation opens. Hotels and tourist accommodation are subject to the introduction of a “Health First” Certification Mark which will prove that the company complies with the health protocols.

Renting a car in Santorini

Archaeological Sites – Museums

Most archeological sites will operate with extended hours from 8 am to 8 pm to avoid overcrowding and to be able to maintain safe distances (1.5 meters). Also, depending on the size of the archeological site, a certain number of visitors per hour will be allowed. The use of hand antiseptic and mask is recommended.
